I found a truly great book in a used bookstore (Wycliff's) the other day. Sanford Levinson, Constitutional Faith (Princeton University Press, 1988), xii + 250 pp. His thesis is basically that the American Constitution and its SCOTUS interpreter play the same roles in American civil religion as did the Bible and the Church in Western Christianity.
