IMHO, The Hours was the best film qua film of the last year. But it ultimately glorifies autonomous escape from normative social relationships (i.e., into homosexuality and suicide). For a very good article arguing that the film and book are ultimately inconsistent with Woolf's modernist vision, see Carol Iannone's article in Commentary.
